Building
Safety and Emergencies
With toilets, elevators
and lights in use all day and night, how do the thousands of New
York buildings continue to operate safely?
The Department of Buildings (DOB) makes sure buildings are safe
and meet health, fire and structural standards. DOB reviews plans
for the construction and alteration of buildings, inspects elevators
and boilers, and licenses trade members, such as plumbers and
electricians. If there is a structural emergency in your building,
you want to complain, or you need information on licensed trade
members, call your DOB borough office.
For after hours emergencies
or broken or unsafe elevator complaints, dial 311.
